Charles V Prayer Book Mug
Take a peek inside our Charles V Prayer Book Mug to find brilliant artwork inspired by a stunning, colorful, illuminated manuscript: one of the earliest known prayer books created for the young Charles V (15001558), the future Holy Roman emperor.
The Story Behind The Art & Illustrations
The first illustration in the book shows Charles' coat of arms from when he was still living in the Habsburg Netherlands before he became emperor. A small book, just 6¾ x 4¾ inches, it features a hand-drawn miniature on almost every page with fully decorated borders. Its art is a fascinating example of Flemish culture from the early sixteenth century. The religious iconography and exceptional illuminations in tempera, ink, and gold, include early Renaissance artistic elements linked to the circle of Simon Bening, famous miniaturist, in the Bruges tradition.
