The Esther Scroll Mug from Museum of the Bible
Take a look inside our Esther Scroll Mug to find elegant artwork from an illuminated Esther scroll made in Israel in the 1970's or later.
The Illumination Of Esther Scrolls
Illumination of Esther scrolls began around 1600 in central and Southern Europe. Biblical scrolls and texts are not adorned with decorative images and visual art in Jewish communities in deference to honoring the name and person of God, as prescribed in the second of the Ten Commandments: "You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the Lord your God am an impassioned God . . ." (Exodus 20:4-5, NJPS). The book of Esther never uses the name of God or even refers to God, thus it has become the one book of the Bible that Jews ornament and illustrate.
