The Pontius Pilate Inscription
The Pontius Pilate Inscription was discovered in June 1961 in secondary use on the western steps of the Roman theatre at Caesarea. The inscription reflects the erecting of a monumental building by Pontius Pilate, possibly a temple, in which Emperor Tiberius was worshiped. The discovery of this inscription provides a monumental backdrop for one of the major people mentioned in the New Testament, and specifies that Pontius Pilate was a "prefect." He governed the Roman Province of Judaea at the time of Jesus (26-36 CE).
