About Illuminated Manuscripts
Medieval artists decorated manuscripts with elaborate borders and intricate illustrations called illuminations. The word illumination comes from the Latin “illuminare,” meaning “to light up, illuminate or make clear.” A medieval devotional book of readings, prayers and psalms, in this copy the birth of three family members of the Fortescues are noted on its calendar of church feasts.
