Mother-of-Pearl Round Nativity - Bethlehem
Not available anywhere else in the Us, these fair-trade Nativity figurines are handcrafted by artisans in Bethlehem at the Piccirillo Handicraft Center exclusively for Museum of the Bible. The Mother-of-Pearl Round Nativity is a beautiful, pearlescent carving of the Nativity with a round shell backdrop and a base. Mother-of-pearl carving is a traditional handicraft in Bethlehem. This art was introduced to the city by Franciscan friars from Damascus during the 14th century.
The Bethlehem Piccirillo Handicraft Center
The Piccirillo Handicraft Center, in the city of Bethlehem, is a project carried out by the John Paul II Foundation and the Custody of the Holy Land organization in 2014 to meet the economic and social needs of the city's population, especially those with special needs. There are 40 artists, who work as a family, creating artistic objects with love. At the Piccirillo Handicraft Center, the inner light shines through the darkness of sight: this is a place where faith speaks when the tongue remains silent.
