Replica Shekel of Tyre Coin
Shekel of Tyre – 1 BC - 1 AD
The 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas by the Pharisees for the betraying of Christ are thought to be this drachma of the Phoenician City of Tyre. The shekel, acceptable as Temple dues, was referred to as "Tyrian money." The obverse shows a laureated head of Melkarth, a Phoenician god in the form of the Greek god Herkales. An eagle stands on a ship's prow with a palm branch in the background. The legend in Greek reads, "Tyre sacred and inviolable sanctuary." The club is a symbol of Melkarth.
